Vidal to Inter within days

Catalan newspaper Sport claims Arturo Vidal will be an Inter player on Monday or Tuesday after terminating his Barcelona contract.

The midfielder has been told to find another club by new coach Ronald Koeman, so rather than negotiate a fee, his contract at Camp Nou is terminated a year early by mutual consent.

According to Sport, they are down to the details and he should fly to Milan for a medical on Monday or Tuesday.

Vidal has already agreed personal terms with the Nerazzurri, despite dropping hints he’d like a return to Juventus as well, and will be reunited with former Bianconeri coach Antonio Conte.

It’s reported that although Vidal will leave as a free agent, Barcelona could ask for a similar situation to when Ivan Rakitic joined Sevilla, asking for a minor payment from Inter.

Roberto Mancini puts Giorgiy chiellini on Italy bench by accident as he wasn’t wearing glasses

Roberto Mancini left defender Giorgio Chiellini on the bench by accident in Italy’s Nations League draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the former Manchester City boss taking the blame for not wearing glasses.

Mancini’s side were held 1-1 in their opening League A Group One match, ending a run of 11 successive wins, with Juventus’ veteran centre-back Chiellini left out of the starting XI in favour of Lazio’s Francesco Acerbi.

Italy won all 10 of their qualifying matches for Euro 2020 as well as a friendly against the United States for the longest winning run in their history which came to an end on Friday night as Edin Dzeko – a former striker for Mancini at City – secured a point for the visitors.

Speaking after the game, Mancini bizarrely revealed that he left 36-year-old Chiellini on the bench by accident because he was not wearing his glasses and could not read the pre-match team sheet properly.

“It was my fault,” Mancini said in a report by Football Italia. “They showed me the line-up, I didn’t have my glasses on and just said it was fine. I didn’t notice Acerbi was there rather than Chiellini.”

The 55-year-old said that Chiellini would now start Italy’s Nations League match against the Netherlands on Monday, live on Sky Sports Premier League with kick-off at 7.45pm.

“Anyway, we had planned originally for Acerbi to play one game and Chiellini another,” Mancini added. “I had asked Giorgio if he wanted to play today or on Monday with Holland, he said today, but we’ll have to swap it now.

“It’s not like we chose a goalkeeper rather than a defender, it’s not a massive difference, but yes, it was an error.”

Vinicius Junior needs to step up

Vinicius Junior is looking ahead to a new season with Real Madrid.

The 2019/20 campaign ended on a disappointing note for the Brazilian, who didn’t come off the bench for Los Blancos against Manchester City in the Champions League.

Eden Hazard started ahead of him that evening in Manchester, though he would’ve at least expected to get some minutes on the pitch.

It wasn’t to be in the end, but now the former Flamengo forward is keen to prove his worth to Zinedine Zidane during pre-season.

Vinicius has been showing off the work he’s been doing during his holidays in order to be in top shape for when pre-season begins.

Despite his young age, the winger knows that he has to up his game this season.

While he was more efficient in front of goal in 2019/20, his performances weren’t too dissimilar than his first year in Spain.

The injuries to Hazard saw his game time increase under Zidane, but the pause in the season due to the coronavirus pandemic came at just the wrong time.

When the Champions League came around in August, Hazard was first choice on the left wing, leaving Vinicius to sit out the second leg in Manchester.

Not much is expected to change going into the new season, with Hazard virtually guaranteed a place in Zidane’s team when he’s fit.

Furthermore, Marco Asensio and Rodrygo Goes have both edged above Vinicius in the pecking order over the last few months.

Nevertheless, the Brazilian is fully focused on making his Real Madrid career a success and there’s no better time to start than the present.

Manchester United star Paul Pogba’is wait for a return to Juventus in 2021’and Pirlo reunion

Paul Pogba is reportedly waiting for a chance to return to Juventus next year and is therefore stalling on a renewal of his Manchester United contract.

The Frenchman, who moved from the Old Lady to United in 2016 for a then-world record deal of £89m, has constantly been linked with a return to the Serie A champions.

With Andrea Pirlo, who Pogba played alongside in midfield during three of his four years in Turin, now the manager at Juventus, the 27-year-old is reportedly eyeing a reunion for 2021, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport.

The report, which is the cover of Saturday’s edition, claims that Pogba is stalling on signing a contract extension at Old Trafford, because he is waiting on a return to Italy.

The French World Cup winner currently has a deal at United until next summer, though there is an option to extend that by a year to 2022.

Any move is not expected to materialise this summer, with Pogba currently satisfied with the situation under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after United qualified for the Champions League.

Pogba in particular flourished post-lockdown, forming an impressive midfield partnership with January signing Bruno Fernandes.

The United midfield was strengthened further this week when United completed the signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

Yet the situation and link between Pogba and Juve could resurface in January, with Pirlo said to be keen on bringing in the playmaker.

The pair won three Serie A titles together and reached the final of the 2014-15 Champions League, losing out to Barcelona in Berlin.

After originally coming through the United academy, Juve picked up Pogba on a free transfer in 2012, and it was in Turin where he first broke through on the European stage.

Pogba last week became the latest high-profile player to test positive for coronavirus, with the new season starting on September 12.

That being said, due to their exertions in the Europa League last month, United’s first game is not until Saturday, 19 September, when they host Crystal Palace.

Majority of fans say better if Messi had left Barcelona AS survey

The majority of 26,000-plus fans surveyed in an AS poll have said that they disagree with Lionel Messi’s decision to stay at Barcelona.

Lionel Messi’s decision to stay at Barcelona has not gone down well with fans. Of the more than 26,000 participants surveyed in an AS poll who were asked: ‘Do you agree with Messi staying at Barcelona?’, 61.6% have said ‘No’, while 38.4% have stated ‘Yes’.

These results indicate the significant loss of support for the Argentine superstar. The soap opera involving Messi and Barcelona – which began early last week after the player sent a burofax demanding to leave the club – ended on Friday when Messi himself confirmed he would stay at Camp Nou in an interview with Goal.

As Barça insisted the only way Messi could leave was through the payment of his €700million release clause, the club’s talisman and captain has accepted he has no choice but to stay – as goes his account in the interview.

Read the full Messi interview here.

Messi: “I would never go to court against Barcelona”

“I thought and was sure that I was free to leave, the president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not. Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for LaLiga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered the whole season,” Messi told Goal.

“And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club. Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700million clause, and that this is impossible.

“There was another way and it was to go to trial. I would never go to court against Barça because it is the club that I love, which gave me everything since I arrived, it is the club of my life, I have made my life here. Barça gave me everything and I gave it everything. I know that it never crossed my mind to take Barça to court.”

Messi slams Barcelona president Bartomeu

Barcelona have stayed relatively silent following the interview, apart from a post on their twitter page including a photo of Messi accompanied by a quote from the star: “I will give it my all. My love for Barça will never change.”

But the reality is Messi still wants to leave Barcelona, a fact that was very clear from the star’s Goal interview, during which he also made severe criticisms of club president, Josep Bartomeu.

“The burofax was to make it official in some way. Throughout the year I had been telling the president that I wanted to leave, that the time had come to seek new goals and new directions in my career. He told me all the time: ‘We’ll talk, not now,’ this and that, but nothing [happened]. The president did not give me a clue at what he was really saying,” said Messi.

“Sending the burofax was making it official that I wanted to go and that I was free and the optional year – I was not going to use it and I wanted to go. It was not to make a mess, or to go against the club, but the way to make it official because my decision had been made.”

Bartomeu: the beaten winner

Lionel Messi’s decision to stay at Barcelona for the 2020/21 season can be marked down as a victory for Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The president stood firm in his position and made it clear to the Argentine that he would not be leaving for anything under his 700 million euro release clause, which was key in prompting Messi to reverse his stance.

But any celebrations that Bartomeu would have been planning were cut short by Messi’s interview with Goal.com.

Hurt by the way he’s been treated, the No.10 held no punches and was clear in his criticism of the president.

Messi has been critical of club figures in the past, but never quite as direct towards the president as on Friday.

Barcelona’s star player spoke of the non-existent project that Bartomeu had at the club, and even accused him of being a liar for the way he had promised that Messi could leave whenever he pleased, only to deny him his exit when that time arrived.

Messi has made it clear that there’s a big conflict at the club between the captain and the president.

Soon, Bartomeu will go to the players to request that they lower their salaries, which won’t be received well by the dressing room.

One storm has passed at the Camp Nou, but there is plenty of danger ahead.

Official: Atalanta sign Juve’s Romero

Juventus defender Cristian Romero has officially joined Atalanta on a two-season loan with option to buy for a total of €18m plus bonuses.

“Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that an agreement has been finalized with Atalanta B.C. S.p.A. for a two-season loan, until 30 June 2022, of the registration rights of the player Cristian Romero for a consideration of € 2 million to be paid during current financial year,” read a statement.

“The agreed consideration might be increased up to € 2 million upon achievement of certain sportive performance objectives over the two-season period.

“The agreement also provides Atalanta B.C. S.p.A. with the option right for the definitive acquisition of the player at a price of € 16 million to be paid in three financial years.”

Juve bought Argentine defender Romero from Genoa for €26m in the summer of 2019, but loaned him straight back to the same club to continue the maturation process.

The 22-year-old is a centre-back, but can also play on the right side of defence when necessary.

He was also linked with Roma and Arsenal, but an Atalanta move had been on the cards.

Allan joins Everton from Napoli on three year deal

Everton have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Allan from Napoli on a three-year contract.

The 29-year-old moves to Goodison Park for an undisclosed fee, but Everton have paid €25m (£22.3m) plus an additional €3m (£2.7m) in incentives, according to Sky in Italy.

The move sees Allan, who has been capped nine times by Brazil, reunite with Carlo Ancelotti at Everton, having previously worked under the Italian for two seasons while he was in charge of Napoli.

The draw of Ancelotti saw Everton beat off competition from Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund to capture Allan, who spent five years in Naples.

“It is a real pleasure to sign for Everton. I am immensely happy to be here,” Allan told evertontv. “I hope, like I have done in my entire career, I contribute with my performances together with my teammates and that I put in some great games, great performances and win important things.

“It is a club with a rich history in the Premier League, has real ambition and then there is Professor Ancelotti. He has done everything possible to bring me here.

“It is the size of the club and the name of the coach which means you don’t think twice about coming to Everton.”

James Rodriguez, who played under Ancelotti at both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, is also close to joining Everton.

Barcelona to sign Memphis Depay

Ronald Koeman is reportedly keen to bring Memphis Depay to Barcelona with him ahead of the 2020/21 LaLiga Santander season.

The newly appointed coach worked closely with Memphis during his time in charge of the Netherlands.

Now, Post United have reported that the Lyon star will become a Barcelona player this transfer window for 25 million euros.

Even despite Lionel Messi’s decision to stay on at the club, Memphis could be brought in as he has been specifically requested by Koeman.
