Luke Shaw admits Manchester United needs reinforcements

Luke Shaw has called on Manchester United to bring in more players before the transfer window closes.

Donny van de Beek, who scored United’s goal in their 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday, remains the club’s only summer signing.

United started their Premier League season a week late following their Europa League involvement and were caught cold in a disappointing display.

Shaw told TV2: “We have a very good group but, personally, I think we need more players to strengthen the squad.

“It can give us a boost. When you look around at how other teams are strengthening their teams, then we must also do it to keep up with the others.”

United’s positive end to last season, securing Champions League football, boosted optimism of a possible title challenge this time around but they will need to perform a lot better than they did against Palace.

Shaw cited a truncated pre-season as one factor behind the slow start.

“Personally, from my point of view, the pre-season that we’ve had altogether is not the correct way it should have been. We’ve had a week all together,” he said.

“My first day back training, I could have probably counted on one hand the number of people who were training. Look at teams who have been together a while, training, playing games. I think Palace have played quite a few more games than us and it showed. We lacked that fitness and confidence.

“We haven’t been able to prepare in the way that we wanted and that’s not an excuse, because we have the quality of players to be able to win games like this, but we weren’t up to it and we’ve been punished. It’s the start of a new season, we should have been fresh.”

Van de Beek: We played too slowly

Van de Beek bemoaned Manchester United’s ponderous play against Palace, describing the home defeat on his debut as “really bad”

“My first match for the club and then you want to win,” Van de Beek said. “It doesn’t matter how you want to win.

“I’m really disappointed that we lose 3-1 at home. I think it’s really bad.

“Yeah (we did not have as much match sharpness as Palace) but last week in training we did really well. We trained good, so my feeling was really positive. But, yeah, today we played too slowly.

“We went too long with the ball and I think against an opponent like Crystal Palace you need to speed up the game to create something. That was not good enough.”

Not only was Van de Beek candid in his assessment but the Netherlands international clearly took no consolation in netting on his debut.

“To play for all the fans in stadiums like this it’s more nice to score,” he said. “But still I scored but we lose and this is the most important thing, that we win.

“We lose but it’s always really nice to play for a club like this. I made my first game and I hope to help the team and next time that we win, for sure.”

United have precious little time to recover as a trip to Championship side Luton awaits in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports, before next weekend’s Premier League match at Brighton.

Solskjaer: We didn’t deserve anything from the game

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in no mood to make excuses after United suffered only their third opening-day home defeat in the Premier League era.

“We didn’t deserve to get anything from the game,” he told Sky Sports. “We started badly and slowly; we looked like a team early on in their preparation in pre-season.

“You could see that they came flying out of the traps. You could see the difference between their prep with four friendlies and this is their third game this season whereas this is only our first game. We had one friendly last week but I think it showed. We were way short.

“You could see the physicality here this evening. They were sharper than us, they were stronger than us and we’ve got to catch up quickly. We can’t wait to have a normal pre-season and our next game is already on Tuesday.”

Solskjaer led the Red Devils to three cup semi-finals and third in the Premier League during a promising first full season in the hotseat, but a lack of transfer activity has since led to growing fan discontent.

Saturday’s season opener offered precious little relief from that pressure, and Solskjaer was asked if the defeat had hammered home the need for reinforcements if the side are to improve on last season’s third-placed finish.

“It’s hammered home that we need to improve,” he added. “That’s not good enough against any team in the Premier League, so we’ll have to work hard.

“We’ve had players here not in the squad tonight for different reasons. The training group we had this morning had seven players on it plus we had a big bench, so they’ll be knocking on the door saying they want to play the next one. Let’s see.”

Timo Werner leads the line,as Chelsea faces Liverpool

Last season there weren’t many Chelsea players who had a case to get into Liverpool’s team.

This season is a different story. Frank Lampard has splashed out and brought in some exciting talent which has seen his Chelsea side transform into – in many people’s eyes – genuine title contenders.

Those credentials will be put to the test on Sunday as they welcome the champions to Stamford Bridge. Ahead of the mammoth clash, Sportsmail have put together a combined XI, but which of Chelsea’s new boys make the cut?

Goalkeeper: Alisson

Considering how desperate Chelsea are to replace their current No 1, this was a fairly obvious choice.

Alisson is one of the best shotstoppers in the Premier League and a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp’s machine.

The Brazilian is unbeatable on his day and has a key role to play in thwarting Chelsea’s new-look attack.

Right Back: Trent Alexander-Arnold

There aren’t many right-backs in world football who would keep Trent Alexander-Arnold out of a team.

Chelsea do have some promising young players coming through in this position – Reece James in particular looks to have a big future ahead of him – but Alexander-Arnold is the perfect example of a modern-day full back and just simply too good to be left out.

He has one of the sweetest right foots in the country, poses a huge threat going forward and is maturing into a defensively sound player as well.

Centre Back: Virgil van Dijk

No left-field choices here, even after his horrorshow against Leeds, Virgil van Dijk HAS to get a spot in this team.

The Dutchman has not quite been at his best in recent months but is a commanding centre-half and arguably remains better than any other player at what he does in the world.

Since joining he has been a rock for Liverpool – Lampard could only wish he had someone like van Dijk at his disposal to fix his defensive woes.

Centre Back: Thiago Silva

It’s not entirely clear how Lampard will use Thiago Silva this season, and he isn’t getting any younger, but the Brazilian has so much pedigree and experience it was too hard to ignore him.

Silva is almost 36 now but there’s a sense he’ll have a big role to play for Chelsea this season both on and off the pitch.

Even though he may not play every game, he is certainly the most talented and decorated centre-half Chelsea have while Joe Gomez has not shown the consistency to prove he deserves this spot ahead of Silva.

Left Back: Ben Chilwell

Cue the Liverpool outrage.

Yes, Andy Robertson is a marvelous player who has been brilliant for Liverpool over the last two seasons, but Ben Chilwell has the capability to be just as influential for Chelsea this term.

He is equally gifted when it comes to crossing and is an astute signing for Chelsea. The England defender has come with a huge price tag on his back, but he is a confident lad and won’t let that affect him.

Centre Midfield: N’Golo Kante

Kante is a world class midfielder and few players – if any – do the simple things as well as him.

You could make an argument for the 29-year-old getting into any starting XI in the world.

His ability to break up play and run all day is crucial to how Lampard wants his team to play and he appropriately bags a place in our team.

Centre Midfield: Jordan Henderson

It would be doing Jordan Henderson a massive disservice to overlook him.

The midfielder was named PFA Player of the Year last season and rightfully so. He is a real leader in the dressing room for Liverpool and is the kind player who is prepared to sacrifice himself for the team.

A true model professional and Liverpool’s success in recent years has a lot to do with him.

Attacking Midfield: Kai Havertz

If you ever saw Kai Havertz play in Germany then you know the talent he possesses.

Chelsea fans were disappointed by the 21-year-old’s debut at Brighton earlier this week, but in time he will prove why Frank Lampard was hellbent on signing him – even at a cost of nearly £90million.

Havertz gives Chelsea a real cutting edge in attack and Klopp will be wary of allowing him to settle into the game early on Sunday. Had Thiago been likely to feature he would have probably taken Havertz’s place and joined Kante and Henderson in a midfield three.

Right Wing: Mohamed Salah

Who else?

Liverpool’s little magician – and the Premier League’s answer to Lionel Messi – was irrepressible and irresistible last time out against Leeds, scoring a hat-trick as the champions kick-started their title defence with a narrow 4-3 win.

Service as usual then. Salah is a real goal-getter, a match-winner and his drive to be the best is infectious. He may be Liverpool’s most important player and Chelsea won’t need telling twice just how dangerous he can be when he’s on song… as he so often is.

Left Wing: Sadio Mane

No one on these shores can thrill like Sadio Mane.

You can’t help but be on the edge of the seat, waiting, expecting something to happen each time the ball arrives at his feet.

He has skill, frightening pace and a real eye for goal. A truly world-class player who can give any defence nightmares. Not many people will envy Reece James on Sunday – he could be in for a long afternoon.

Striker: Timo Werner

Werner looks like the player Chelsea have been missing for a long time. A prolific striker with genuine pace, pace that can hurt defences.

Now Roberto Firmino is a wonderfully-gifted footballer – there’s a reason Klopp holds him in such high esteem – and the only reason he misses out here is because he is not as clinical as Werner. The German lives on goals whereas Firmino prefers to interlink and play a little deeper.

Werner has made an auspicious start to his Chelsea career with a promising performance in Chelsea’s win at Brighton and you sense it won’t be long before he opens his account for them. Klopp wanted to sign the forward in the summer but missed out on him and Werner may just make him come to regret that on Sunday.

Manchester city close to signing Jules Kounde’ from Sevilla

Guardiola has chosen the French centre-back to strengthen City’s defence. Negotiations with Sevilla and the player could be completed in the next few days.

Manchester City are close to signing a central defender which was Txiki Beguiristain’s priority during the current transfer window. After studying a number of players who are on the market, City have opted for Sevilla’s Jules Koundé.

Talks have been ongoing between City and Sevilla since last week. Koundé is in favour of a move to the Etihad as long as both clubs reach an agreement. The operation is expected be tied up for a fee of around 50 million euros and what is being negotiated now is how much the fixed payment will be and how much will be added on in terms of performance-based bonuses.

Koundé’s superb season

Koundé, who was one of the revelations at Sevilla last season, has a buy-out clause of 80 million euros – a figure which City are not prepared to pay in a depressed market. City drew up a shortlist of central defenders, potential signings which included Atlético Madrid’s José María Giménez, Napoli’s Kaulidou Koulibaly and Jules Koundé. The club was also in talks Napoli and Atlético.

Negotiations with Atlético Madrid to sign Giménez lasted several weeks but City’s offer was much lower than the Spanish club’s expectations, bearing in mind that the player’s buy-out is 105 million euros. According to sources at AtléticoCity offered 89 million euros for Giménez, a figure which the English club has since denied;  off the record, they say their top bid for the Uruguayan centre-back was closer to 60 million euros.

With Giménez ruled out after failing to find any middle ground with Atlético, City turned their attentions to 21-year-old Koundé and following several intense negotiations between Monchi, and Beguiristain, a deal was reached. If the operation goes through, Julen Lopetegui will be without one of the surprise stars of last season.

Bartomeu reviel how he convinced Messi to stay at Barcelona

Beleaguered Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has given himself a pat on the back for convincing Lionel Messi to stay at the Nou Camp.

Messi had his heart set on leaving the Catalan giants this summer and joining former boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

The Argentine superstar was convinced a clause in his contract allowed him to leave Barcelona for free, but the club and La Liga rejected his claims.

Messi eventually agreed to stay for another season and will now be allowed to leave for nothing next summer.

And Bartomeu, who faces a no-confidence vote in November over his presidency, insists the club have now moved on.

“I won’t get into any conflict with him. He’s our captain and the leader of our team,” he told Catalan television network TV3.

“I couldn’t let him leave the club, he is the best player of all time and the team needs him. Having Messi is a guarantee of success.

“We have seen him do his talking on the pitch and we have moved on from the saga. We should congratulate ourselves for getting Messi to stay with us and for how he has behaved in the last few days. The best player in the world should stay at our home.”

Bartomeu’s position is under threat after 20,000 fans signed a petition to call a vote over his future.

And he added: “The board and I will keep working to ensure we have the most competitive team possible.

“We will speak again after validating the votes but right now no-one wants to quit. The club won’t stop and we will keep working, we have lots of issues to sort out.”

Patrice Evra claims rumours about David Moyes’daughter affected Wilfred Zaha at Manchester United

Patrice Evra has hinted that unfounded rumours about Wilfried Zaha’s affair with David Moyes’ daughter ruined the winger’s career at Manchester United in 2013.

The Crystal Palace winger was a promising player in the Old Trafford ranks when Sir Alex Ferguson retired and Moyes replaced the legendary Scot seven years ago.

But Zaha played just four times under Moyes in his debut season at Old Trafford before moving back to Palace, with Evra claiming that the suspected affair with the ex-United coach’s daughter while he was playing there having an effect on him.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Saturday night, the Frenchman said: ‘I remember what ruined his career for Manchester United is when he had this true or untrue affair with David Moyes’ daughter.

‘Because in the pre-season I remember he was playing every game but when that news came out, (he was) out of the game and he disappeared. He would be a massive trade for United.’

Zaha responded to the rumours about the suspected affair back in 2015, telling Sportsmail that he has not even met Moyes’ daughter.

The winger said: ‘The thing that really frustrated me about the whole United thing was the fact that people didn’t know what actually went on at the training ground.

‘There were just a load of rumours that used to just come out somehow and people would believe them.

‘It was either I slept with David Moyes’s daughter or I have got a bad attitude. Those are the two rumours that stuck with me until I left. I have had no say since then.’

Since leaving Old Trafford back in 2014, shortly after Moyes’ sacking, Zaha has become a cult hero at Selhurst Park, taking his total Eagles appearances to 364 matches over two separate spells.

After scoring 23 times for Palace over the last three seasons, he netted the winner in the Eagles’ opening match of the 2020-21 season against Southampton last weekend.

Just before Zaha took on United in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford, Evra gave an insight into the dangers that the 27-year-old possesses and how the winger has even outgrown Palace.

Evra added: ‘He’s really clever. You have to give him the keys because all Crystal Palace fans know that Wilfried Zaha is better than Crystal Palace, with all due respect. But he’s such an electric player.’

Bartomeu: nobody plans to resign at Barcelona

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has reiterated that nobody in his administration is planning to resign, let alone himself, after coming under significant pressure due to the the vote of no confidence being brought against him.

Bartomeu has no plans to relinquish his position of power before legally obligated to in 2021.

“At the moment, nobody plans to resign,” Bartomeu admitted to TV3.

“The board will continue working to make a team that is competitive as possible.

“The club doesn’t stop; we continue working and we have many pending things in motion.

“This isn’t the typical market given the fact it ends on October 5.”

Fans and members of the club have received the requisite number of signatures on their vote of no confidence in Bartomeu and his board, something which has surprised the maligned president.

“The figure has surprised even those who started the motion,” he added.

“We are in a normal process of validation; the club will continue to everything with the utmost transparency and care.

“Again, nobody wants to resign, and we’re all focused on the day-to-day running of the club.”

Lionel Messi accused Bartomeu of lying to him and breaking his word over the exit clause in his contract, yet the president refused to comment.

“I won’t enter any dispute with the captain,” he declared.

“These are things that have to be discussed at home.

“We must congratulate ourselves that Messi is still with us; the best player in the world must be at home.”

Official: Tottenham signed Sergio Reguilon

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid.

The left-back signs a five-year deal in north London after finalising a move worth 30 million euros in transfer fees, and he will wear the No.3 shirt.

Reguilon was put up for sale by Real Madrid this summer because of the presence of Marcelo and Ferland Mendy in his position under Zinedine Zidane.

After facing competition from Arsenal and Manchester United for the 23-year-old, Jose Mourinho’s Spurs have sealed his signature.

Tottenham were the only club willing to accept Real Madrid’s buy-back clause proposal.

Sevilla were also in the race to sign him, but they weren’t able to afford the cost of bringing him back to Andalusia on a permanent deal.

Reguilon has become the second full-back from Real Madrid’s academy to be sold by the club this summer, after Achraf Hakimi moved to Inter for 40m euros.

The Spaniard first joined the academy at Los Blancos at the age of eight and, once he was old enough to play senior football, he was loaned out to Logrones.

After a couple of stints at Logrones, Reguilon returned to Real Madrid to play for Castilla before being promoted to the first team for the 2018/19 season.

The defender flourished under Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari, featuring in big clashes against Barcelona and Ajax.

The arrival of Zidane and Mendy, though, saw Reguilon pushed out of the picture, instead spending the following campaign impressing on loan at Sevilla.

After winning the Europa League under Lopetegui and earning his first senior Spanish call-up, the left-back has chosen the Premier League as his next career step
